Sting

Year: 2003
Manufacturer: Blå Station

Could we make a chair by the yard and then slice it like a salami? The idea was born when we visited a factory that made extruded aluminium products. The result is an unusual solution to the challenge of designing a regular chair. Sting’s seat and backrest are made of aluminium that is extruded in lengths of up to 60 metres.

These long extrusions are subsequently divided and anodised to become the seats and backs of Sting chairs and benches. The gap between the seat and backrest sections is virtually invisible. No screws are needed: the stainless steel legs give the frame the rigidity it needs and lock the entire construction securely in place.

The material allows very thin dimensions, making Sting usable indoors and out, and eminently stackable. Available with armrests, upholstery in polyurethane, leather-covered seat, different sizes of seat pads, armrests, linking devices, and a folding, removable writing tablet.

The chair is 100 per cent recyclable. Sting is represented in the collections of the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm.
